How Does Dengue Adversely Affect Health?

Dengue is a viral fever spread by a mosquito called Aedes aegypti. Changing weather conditions provides a better environment for these mosquitoes to breed and perhaps spread the virus among humans. Though this fever is not transmitted from one human to another, it could be deadly and not easy to diagnose.

According to estimates shared by CDC (The Centre for Disease Control), around 400 million dengue cases are diagnosed each year globally. Alarmingly, this normal-looking fever is responsible for killing more than 1 million patients annually. Different health organisations and local governments are working on preventive methods to curb the disease.

An Overview Of Dengue Fever

Dengue fever is a vector-borne disease that causes severe joint and muscle pain. The symptoms of the dengue virus can vary from mild to severe. Moreover, in a mild infection, you may not even notice if this is dengue or regular fever. In contrast, the severe effects of dengue could be deadly and need proper medical attention at all costs.

Mostly the symptoms of dengue fever are noticeable after the 3rd or 4th day of the insect bite. Which includes:

    • Sudden high fever
    • Swelling in lymph glands
    • Severe pain in the belly and head
    • Muscle and joint pain that hinders movement
    • Vomiting
    • Bleeding from gums, nose, unhealed wounds, etc.
    • Blood in stool or vomit
    • Feeling irritated, tired, and restless

Though no specific medication or vaccine is available for dengue, these symptoms could be relieved by giving prescribed over-the-counter medicines. Apart from this, plenty of fluids and water is the best way to regulate dengue fever and its complications.

After Effects Of Dengue Fever

Dengue infection is not only a deadly disease but often has adverse effects and breaks down the body’s immunity. Common side effects that are noticeable even after the recovery are:

Increased stress and anxiety: Patients with a history of this disease suffer from hypertension and anxiety. In the case of severe dengue infection, some patients have also complained of PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder).

Hair fall: Hair is the first thing that gets affected once you recover from any illness. Hair Loss after dengue fever can last up to one or two months, and focusing on such side effects is essential.

Low immunity and fatigue: Recovering from any disease is not easy, but with dengue fever, the immune system may take a little longer to get back on track. This would also make you feel constantly weak and tired. However, focusing on a healthy diet and a good lifestyle is known to be effective.

Constant joint pain: Dengue fever can inflict pain on joints and muscles, which could stay for a little longer. Thus, adding a mineral-rich diet and vitamin supplements would help.
